Plot Element Practice with Robert Munsch Books!

This mini-unit comes with a teaching plan that could stretch across two or three 45-min. class periods as you model, then students read and analyze the plot components. Add on any of the “take it to the next level” suggestions in the plan to make this a full week of study! (Take it to the Next Level suggestions include reader’s reaction, character, theme, and setting activities. The standards listed below support some of those Next Level suggestions.)

The titles we suggest using (but can have substitutions) include:

  • The Paper Bag Princess
  • Thomas’s Snowsuit
  • Smelly Socks
  • Stephanie’s Ponytail
  • 50 Below Zero

Besides the teaching plan, you receive the summary of the five books with escalation / climax noted for your benefit and two versions of a plot diagram: 1 with reader reaction space and 1 without…and both versions are ready to print on either a letter (8.5″X11″) page or a legal (8.5″X14″) page for your middle school workers.

The next step in plot element practice!

So you’ve taught students plot and conflict (perhaps using this bundle), and your students are ready to practice using text! You look and all you can find are short stories with difficult plots for analyzing – much too difficult for your older striving readers to apply plot element practice! This is where Robert Munsch’s books come in! They are far heavier in print and vocabulary than earlier picture books and text heavy enough for students (even our older ones) to take them seriously – well, as seriously as you can take a Robert Munsch book!

This book study is the perfect bridge between learning about the plot diagram and using it with grade level text!
