If you work with older striving readers, you may notice many of them cannot verbalize the differences between genres, let alone format and purpose! This instructional aid / practice set helps you close that gap!
Use the included lesson plan to begin with the definitions of genre, purpose, and format, then sort information into each category. OR use just the genre section (or just the purpose section, or just the format section) for focused instruction!
Once students have proficiency with the concepts, stretch their understanding by using some of the included extension activity ideas!
Sorting categories include:
genre
fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and subgenres for sorting into those four: historical fiction, science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, dystopian, humor, thriller, folktales, tall tales, myths, legends, fairy tales, fables, narrative poems, dramatic poems, lyric poems, argumentative, informational, biography, autobiography, memoir, comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy, melodrama.
