From Syllables to Words: Building Word Solving Fluency (Monochrome Version)

Have you used the color-coded version of this product and have students who are ready to move to the single-color version? These are slightly more advanced for students who understand decoding from left to write. We know the most effective intervention uses the swing back approach (detailed in this blog). We must go back to pick up missed skills, but then move forward, implementing the skills in grade-level appropriate ways. This product takes your students one more step forward into multisyllabic words!

Follow the routine:

1. If students have used the color-coded version, they may be able to read the syllable and the three words without teacher modeling, but if not, follow the same routine as the color-coded version. (Start with saying the syllable, then having students repeat the sound of the syllable before going to the next step.)

2. Students chorally read the three words below the syllable. Work toward accuracy and fluency.

3. Correct any errors and / or clarify any word parts.

A teacher’s guide helps you understand teaching points along the way (such as the -ate ending).
