Verbs for Secondary Students

Striving secondary readers often have comprehension issues rooted in sentence level understanding. Teaching basic grammar, including verbs, is a great way to help these students! This set is just what you need as it contains reference posters and manipulatives.

1. What do verbs do?  Meant for older students, this poster discusses four uses of verbs including showing action, stating a fact, linking a subject to a noun, pronoun or adjective, and helping other verbs.
2. Action Verbs – Display both physical and mental actions.
3. State of Being Verbs – Help students identify these sneakier verbs!
4. Linking Verbs – Support students’ understanding of nouns and adjectives that fall after subjects / verbs.
5. (2 POSTERS) Helping Verbs and Auxiliary Verbs (use the one that fits your terminology)
6. Verb Infinitives – Students learn the infinitive form and how regular verbs change by tense.
7. (2 POSTERS) Irregular Verbs (use the one that fits your students’ maturity level) Because we are middle school teachers, too, the first poster removes the verbs that typically cause chaos in the classroom. (When you know, you know!)

1. Verbs for Sorting: Formatted to print on Avery 8859, Avery 5871, or generic, like these; or print and cut apart. Laminate and store, or store in binders in business card sleeves, such as these.     *110 verb cards that include be verbs, linking verbs, helping verbs, mental and physical action verbs – all written using an adolescent-friendly font and words that are more typically encountered for older readers.
